Gi vs. No-Gi Jiu Jitsu: What’s the Difference and Which Should You Train?

If you’re new to Jiu Jitsu, you’ve probably heard two terms thrown around: Gi and No-Gi.
So what’s the difference—and which one should you train?
At Lake Arrowhead Jiu Jitsu, we offer both styles and believe there’s value in each. This post breaks it down in simple terms so you can understand how they work, what makes them unique, and which might be the better fit for you (or your kid).
What Is Gi Jiu Jitsu?
Gi Jiu Jitsu is practiced in a traditional uniform (called a gi) that includes a jacket, pants, and belt. The gi is made of thick material—similar to a judo uniform—which allows you to grip the fabric and use it for controls, sweeps, and submissions.
In Gi Jiu Jitsu:
-
You can grab your opponent’s sleeves, collar, and pants to control them.
-
The pace tends to be slower and more strategic, like a physical chess match.
-
Grip fighting becomes a huge part of the game.
What Is No-Gi Jiu Jitsu?
No-Gi Jiu Jitsu is practiced in athletic gear like rashguards and shorts—no thick jacket, no belt, no fabric grips. It’s closer to wrestling with submissions.
In No-Gi Jiu Jitsu:
-
You can only grip the body—not the clothes.
-
The pace is often faster and more explosive.
-
Leg attacks, scrambles, and athletic movement become more important.
Which One Should You Train?
🔷 Train Gi If:
-
You like technical strategy and grip fighting
-
You’re interested in belt promotions and traditional rank progression
-
You want a slower pace to start and learn strong fundamentals
-
You enjoy the culture and tradition of martial arts
🔷 Train No-Gi If:
-
You prefer a faster pace and athletic movement
-
You’re interested in MMA or wrestling-style grappling
-
You like minimal gear and a modern training vibe
-
You want to compete in submission grappling tournaments
What We Recommend
Train both.
Seriously.
Each style sharpens different tools. Gi teaches patience, precision, and positional control. No-Gi builds reaction time, scrambles, and submission chains. Together, they round out your game.
